Devil’s Den
October 2, 2005

When we learned of a photography contest scheduled for later in the month at Devil’s Den State Park, Joey and I got excited and started making plans to enter. The rules for the contest sounded fun and challenging - all pictures had to be taken at the park on the day of the contest, and the pictures could not be digitally enhanced or even cropped. The boys and I went on a mid-Sunday scouting trip, which began with a quick walk down the dry creekbed of Ellis Branch to Lee Creek on the park’s southern edge.

We drove over to Campground E, parked the truck, and walked down to Lee Creek. I made the familiar bet with the boys over keeping their shoes dry. They love to lose that one, and do so every time! We walked up the creek a couple hundred yards until both banks became too steep to traverse, then we found a hiking trail and continued upstream.

We stopped for a rest at the suspension bridge site. The bridge has been washed away and rebuilt twice that I know of. We continued along the trail then crossed the dry spillway over the dam. After that we retraced out path back to the truck, then drove to the park store for candy and drinks.
